This home renovation tour (2016 Parade of Renovated Homes) was put on by the Homebuilders Association of Vancouver (HAVAN) and takes place annually in late May/early June. This year TQ Construction had an open house featuring this Burnaby bungalow to illustrate to visitors how a homeowners’ goals can be achieved in multiple stages to alleviate the impact of schedule and budget as well as minimize displacement from the home. The overall renovation is extensive, but approaching it in 3 phases made for a more comfortable experience. This 1950s South Slope bungalow was brought into the 21st century, while preserving its heritage charm, through renovation taking place over 3 phases.
The front of the home was altered to improve functionality. Changes visually broaden the front elevation, and provide a less crowded parking arrangement. Installing a new garden, designed for low-maintenance and reduced water usage, raises yard 2′ allowing drive-up level accessibility for aging-in-place. New granite chimney replaces too-dominant red brick and is kept to complement facade with new granite lower wall facing; while inside the greatroom a new contemporary fireplace is featured.
Bringing outdoor living ‘into’ the kitchen, by 20 feet of eclipse and tilt-and slide doors, enhances enjoyment of both spaces, and provides 180 degree view spanning south from Mount Baker to the Gulf, visible from anywhere in the great room living area. A must see if you are inclined towards improving your home not only for design, but for function and the accessibility of aging-in-place.
